Atra Haeresis are a very new band that currently have next to no information about them online outside of the fact that they have members from both Russia and Belarus. Their debut, Pretium, is a damn fine blast of heavily melodic Black/Death the way the Swedes used to make back in the '90s. The playing is very professional for a debut, with every track sounding distinct from one another without ever dropping in quality. Some of the songs are more experimental than others, such as "Vaunted Dyer" with its shamanic vocal lines, "The Sacred Games," and the oppressive closing title track, but they are all expertly crafted and engaging slices of old-school Black/Death in a way that makes real standouts hard to pick. A strong debut from a very promising band. |
