Monasterium are a Polish band who sound like they kind of wish they were Swedish, as this is a very Swedish Doom sound they are working here. The production and guitar sound are spot-on, and the riffs are good, even if they are pretty derivative. This thing tries to evoke the doomy atmosphere of the classics like Candlemass, but it falls short, not even measuring up to Solitude Aeturnus. Vocalist Michal Strzelecki is a weak point, as while he has a nice upper range, his midrange and lower registers get more play here, and they are strictly average. The songwriting is pretty bland, and the vocal lines don’t rise above that and become memorable in any way. So, this comes across as a good try, but it lacks the authority of the good stuff. |
