I am so wary of Folk Metal bands these days, as too many of them are just melodeath bands who want to drink a lot. I had never heard of Fenrir before, but despite the very obvious name, I find myself impressed by this. Too many folk bands just throw in every sound they can come up with, but Fenrir really put together a sound that has identity and consistency. It helps that the vocals are not the expected sing/bark combo but handled exclusively by vocalist and violinist Elsa Thouvenot. She has a light, clear voice, and accompanying herself with the violin she creates melodies that wind around and trade off with one another. The rest of the band, it must be admitted, does not make much of an impression, pretty much just providing a foundation for Thouvenot to do her thing. The songs are all pretty good, even if none are amazing, and the album creates a lot of atmosphere. Sometimes the songs repeat more than they should, and this probably could have benefited from some trimming, but this is still a band worth keeping an eye on. |
