Damn. I hadn't realized how long it's been since I last reviewed some Grave Digger. This is one of those bands that deserves respect despite an uneven discography. Around since the late '70s, they didn't pack up and leave during the "dark '90s," unlike many of their contemporaries, instead releasing some of their best albums during that period. Symbol of Eternity ranks amongst their average-to-above-average albums. There are no surprises here: the album is filled with the kind of songs the band has been releasing for the past 20 years or so. A few very catchy songs and some not so catchy, but nevertheless quite listenable. I haven't found myself bored listening to this, but it definitely has its highlights. "Battle Cry," which follows the intro, is a furious speedy song that's a little reminiscent of Excalibur in style, without quite getting there. The title track is a slow song that seems to have inherited from "The Spell," which makes it noticeable for fans of Excalibur. "Heart of a Warrior" is another catchy little speedster bound to get live crowds going. "Hell is My Purgatory" is a singalong monster (and check out the cool video), and "Sky of Swords," while not all that great, as a great singalong chorus. Closer "Hellas Hellas" is another highlight, a fast heavy/power metal song that gets the headbanging and the vocal lines (in Greek?) are catchy as hell. When the song comes on, you know the album is coming to an end, but it makes you wish it kept going. Grave Digger have done better in the past, but there's more than enough worthy material on here to make it worth checking out if catchy European heavy/power metal with an epic vibe is up your alley.
