Debut album for this German act I knew was a one-man band before I even checked. You just don't get this kind of deeply myopic depressed shit from groups of people. This is the sound of one guy in a dark room with a lot of equipment. I have seen this described as Doom/Death, and I guess the argument could be made, as it straddles that Death/Black line. It doesn't have a guitar sound washed in a lot of reverb, but it's the bass that is overdriven to the point where it becomes an omnipresent, oppressive drone that throbs through the entire album. The songs are long and drawn-out, and I don't know if he quite has enough going on to justify the length, but what this album does well is create a dense, harrowing mood that really draws you in. |
