Sometimes Doom bands that dabble in stoner sounds just have a nicely occult atmosphere, and others use it as an excuse to be shapeless and dull. Don't get high on your own supply. Anyway, this is the debut for a Russian band playing Middle-Earth themed Doom with more than a bit of stoner in the works, but they do all right. They do have a tendency to repeat themselves a lot, and so when they have a dull main riff it just gets run into the ground, but when they get a good one, they ride it on out of town and it's actually fun. The vocals are an undistinguished low grumble that's mixed so low it almost isn't there. This band shows a knack for good riffs, but an almost total lack of songwriting craft, as they just kind of blare along and then stop, without much in the way of build or dynamic. I enjoy this more than I probably should, but it's pretty rough. |
