Metal Dream is the third album from Italy's Witchunter. I reviewed their debut and found it flawed but promising. On this release, the band continue to flail away in a punk-fueled NWOBHM style but have perhaps reigned things in a bit, resulting in a slightly more coherent album. The singer still goes back and forth between a gravelly shout and a high-pitched wail, but it feels a little more intentional and serves the songs better. There are some traditional elements on Metal Dream, such as the opening guitar and bass riffs on "Hold Back the Flame" which are very Saxon-esque, but in general there is a wilder, more rambunctious vibe to the album. Think early Venom or Exciter. Metal Dream isn't amazing, but if 42 minutes of music in the vein of "Teacher's Pet" and "Long Live the Loud" sounds appealing, you should probably give it a listen. |
