Always nice to discover something I missed. The metal landscape is sadly littered with releases—usually from the early '80s or the mid-90s—from bands who never went anywhere and who never got much attention no matter how good they were. One of the pleasures of the Internet age has been the efforts of labels like Sentinel Steel, Cult Metal Classics, and Classic Metal Records to unearth these lost gems and polish them up. Moonrock are a '90s band, but they sound like an '80s band, definitely in that vein of US bands like Riot or Vicious Rumors who kind of straddle the line between metal and hard rock. This was their only release, a demo put out in 1999 on a tiny label, and I would say I don't know why it didn't get more attention, but it was 1999, and that's all the explanation you need. This is slick, sharp Heavy Metal with that classic US feel, highlighted by catchy riffs and the first-rate vocals of the late Shmoulik Avigal, who died just a couple of years ago. The recording is surprisingly glossy for a demo-level recording, and the songwriting is really consistent for an album with this many tracks. The band does engage in the sin of repeating choruses Too Many Times, but not too bad. This rerelease adds four extra tracks at the end, and while the recording on these songs is less sharp, they still sound good, even if the lyrical focus was obviously shifted to try to make the band more commercial. If you are a fan of classic US Metal, then you need to check this out. |
