Always strange to me when a band makes a self-titled album that is not a debut. Like, you didn't have a better idea? This is the fourth full-length from this Aussie project, which seems to consist of two guys in a studio with a drum machine. I expected this to be much more mellow, in the vein of other bands that fall into the more melodic end of the Black Metal pond, but though this is definitely influenced by Summoning, it is more hard-edged than I would have thought. A lot of epic/atmospheric bands only barely seem to have interest in being harsh or heavy at all, but this band is more like Elffor or even classic Forefather like The Fighting Man, working a snarling guitar sound and much more guitar-driven songs overall. This album creates a lot of good atmosphere, has good riffs, and it's engaging while it's on, but the songs don't have a whole lot of individuality, so it's hard for anything to really stick with you. This is a strong disc, but I'd like to see this band work to create a bit more identity. |
