Old-school, early to mid-80s heavy metal with a modern twist is what Alcatrazz offer us on Take No Prisoners. I had to go check if Biff Byford wasn't singing on this because the singer really reminds me of him; no way Biff wasn't an influence. The album is quite varied, with upbeat heavy metal rockers that you can't stand still while listening to them, and beautiful power ballads that just grab you. I really like the vocal lines on most of the album; that's what stuck with me the most. That doesn't take anything away from the music, which ranges from straightforward, raw heavy metal all the way to more intricate, prog-tinged passages. Nothing to skip over here, the songs aren't all of equal quality for they all have something to keep your attention. I guess I'll need to go check out their previous albums now... |
