I haven't reviewed a huge swath of Finsterforst's releases, but I love Rastlos and can take or leave Mach dich frei. The former is atmospheric/folk/black metal gold while the later leans more on the folk and less on the black and is a little disjointed, in my opinion. Now we have the "mini" LP (at 40+ minutes, it's longer than a lot of "proper" albums) Jenseits which consists of one song in four parts. Finsterforst once again embrace both clean and harsh singing and bring in some excellent low harmonized vocals, especially on "Kapitel IV: Katharsis." There's a good balance between the different singing styles and they match up with the music well. Musically, Jenseits is closer to Mach dich frei but it feels less haphazard in its flow. You have the pummeling riffs and soaring choruses of "Kapitel I: Freiheit" followed by the marshal beat of "Kapitel II: Dualitat" which, if Peter Jackson's The Two Towers is ever re-scored, needs this as the soundtrack to the orcs leaving Minas Morgul. "Kapitel III: Reflexionen" features acoustic instruments and the kind of melodies that evoke the beauty of deep, pathless forests and then we're back to the epic closer, "Kapitel IV: Katharsis." Absorbing one song that lasts 40 minutes is no easy task, so buckle in for repeated listens. The upside is that each time, nuances that were missed become apparent and the whole experience is enhanced. Jenseits has been getting a lot of spins and it keeps growing on me. Single, EP, mini album, whatever you choose to call it, Jenseits is a cool addition to Finsterforst's catalog.
