Abstrakt are a Finnish project that's been rumbling in the underground since 2008, but in spite of that, it's only recently that I have learned of them. That's partially explained by the fact that their second album, Uncreation, came out in 2021, so at this rate, I'll be happy to tell you how their third release is when it comes out in 2029. But enough light jabs, let's talk music. This album is definitely in that black/death style obsessed with symphonics, making this fairly similar to established bands in the vein of Limbonic Art and Dimmu Borgir with traces of Finnish exemplars like Thyrane and Eternal Tears of Sorrow, if not as adventurous as that might sound. The songwriting is refined and professional, but it has that problem many albums like it have where all the various bells and whistles overstuff the compositions and make them bloated and unfocused. It's certainly nowhere near as bad about it as, say, Wintersun, and the times when things quiet down a little show flashes of greatness, but at nearly an hour of so much going on, Uncreation ends up containing all the pieces it needs without entirely understanding how to put them together and trying too hard to do so. A promising release, but Abstrak are going to need tighter, less excessive songwriting to really fulfill their potential. |
