When I first started spinning Ascia's debut, The Wandering Warrior, I was expecting some epic doom, but it quickly became apparent it is a stoner effort with doom elements. The guitars are drenched in reverb, which is expected, but I can picture the conversation in the studio not being, "do you want more reverb on the guitars?" but "do you want any guitars on your reverb?" It's that thick. The vocals are a faceless, monotone shout drowning underneath the guitars and the riffs, which other than a few Sabbathian ones like "Samothrace," all sound similar to one another. All these things add up to a dull, monotonous album so unless stoner/doom is really your thing, there's nothing to see (or hear) here. |
