With a name such as "Purgation", I was expecting some kind of death metal band... Not so, although the guitars seem to be downtuned to the same level as many death metal bands. Thats pretty much where the "similarities" end, however. Purgation is more of a heavy metal outfit with somewhat of a stoner rock/doomish feel to it. The vocalist is pretty good, well-controlled clean vocals are a highlight on this recording and the vibes pretty much match that of the music. His voice reminds me of some other vocalists, although I just cant put my finger on it. The songs are slow to mid-paced with a couple of speedier parts - but the overall feeling is "slow and heavy" (although some of that heaviness comes more from the downtuning...) I like the guitar solos here, I dont know but they seem to have some 70s vibe to them. Definitely not a bad CD, although Ive heard similar stuff before and the band hasnt invented anything here - but this is very competently played. Personally this is not exactly my cup of tea, but fans of that type of music may want to check them out.
