Ice Howl, out of Bloomington, Indiana, has been around for ten years and has put out three full-length albums and a number of shorter releases in that time. Reborn and Reforged is their 2024 EP, featuring three songs from their debut Crack the Earth and one from their third album Darkness Beyond, which is getting a CD release courtesy of Stormspell Records with a couple of bonus tracks that originally appeared on their 4-way split from 2023. Formerly a solo project of guitarist Travis Roach, he has now converted Ice Howl to a full band and has rerecorded these songs as a way to introduce the new members. Ice Howl plays a thick, chunky heavy/doom metal with fuzzy riffs and throaty female vocals that work together rather well. They don't play particularly slowly; they just lay down leaden riff after leaden riff on cuts like "Sorcerer's Call" and "Crack the Earth" that roll over your eardrums like a steamroller. The first four songs are gold if you are into bands like Smoulder and Stygian Crown, with the last two less heavy but still solid. Adding singer Zebah Latifi has elevated Ice Howl a lot and I am eagerly anticipating the band's next full album with her at the microphone. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
