Not the most unique name to pick in this day and age—there are 17 bands with this name on Metal Archives—the Californians from Predator can at least boast that the band was first formed in 1984, so if they weren't the first to use the name, it must have been pretty close. Releasing a debut in 1986, 2025's Unsafe Place is their second album. They offer here some modern melodic heavy metal with an occasional old-school vibe. I wish I liked this more, but it feels more like a work in progress than a finished product. There are some good ideas here, but I think the band should have worked on this more before releasing it. It feels amateurish—not in a good way—and, as such, is kind of cringy at times. The vocalist sometimes sounds OK but sometimes tries to do too much. But despite that I kind of like him; there's something about his delivery that's kind of catchy even though there's room for improvement. Musically, I can't say there's much to write home about, though there are some decent passages here and there. It's a very uneven album that sometimes is really fun, and at other times it feels like the guys were working on a demo and were not quite there yet. So, obviously, I'm not sold on Unsafe Space, but I hear enough potential here to keep an eye on the band in the future.
