Löanshark is a Spanish band I first ran across on Bandcamp and their 2021 compilation The Gangland Tapes. They've now been picked up by ROAR/Rock of Angels for their debut album, No Sins to Confess, and from the first notes of "Electric Shocking Waves," I have been transported back to the mid-80s and all the glorious, underground heavy metal imports and indie records that sunk their hooks into me and have never let go. Löanshark plays, simple, speedy, heavy fucking metal from start to finish on No Sins to Confess. The singer has a high, clear voice, well suited to the music and the guitars have a great sound, making the mound of catchy riffs even more infectious. There is no pretense to Löanshark's lyrics, just gloriously '80s subjects like women, metal and getting in over your head with bad guys. So many bands are mining the '80s for their sound, and plenty do a good job, but very few capture the spirit the way Löanshark have. They've struck that perfect balance between writing great songs that sound authentic and not sounding too much like any one specific band that you remember. It's hard to pick a favorite, as nearly every song is a winner. Fans of '80s heavy metal, especially those classic Mausoleum Records releases by bands like Belgium's Killer and Crossfire, and newer bands that "get it," like Sin Starlett, should be adding No Sins to Confess to their collections pronto.
