I never followed Paul's post-Maiden career; I only own the Paul Di'Anno's Battlezone album from 1986. So, when this promo showed up, I figured it was a good way to check out some of his other stuff. This is material from his time at Metalville Records, including a couple of unreleased tracks, and is a mix of live and studio tracks. Part of the proceeds of the sale of the album will go to a charity named Metality e.V. My first thought after the first listen is that I've been missing out by not following his career. The tracks here are all just plain good heavy metal, and for the most part, I like his vocals better than on the first two Maiden albums. You get a mix of in-your-face rockers with a very old-school style, the kind of stuff that gets you headbanging and air-guitaring, along with a couple of ballads/semi-ballads to cool off your jets. While this is, according to the promo info, a collection of Metalville Records stuff, there is a live rendition of "Running Free" on here as well, because of course there is. ;) There's a good variety of material to be found here and the live tracks are from various shows. Despite the different provenance, the album flows pretty well and doesn't feel disjointed. Overall, a very enjoyable collection of solid heavy metal songs. |
