Angel of Damnation seem to go about 7 years between releases, and this is their latest one. This is a kind of retro Heavy/Doom project featuring a bunch of German veterans playing some decent, stripped-down stuff in a general Sabbathy vein. This time out, they got Neudi to play drums, so those are solidly done, even if they are not nearly making full use of his powers. Vocalist Gerrit Mutz (who has not taken off those little round shades for like 20 years) has improved a lot over the years. Once I would have called him the worst singer in metal, but now he has learned to tone down his excesses and he sounds pretty good. He's not great, but he avoids embarrassing himself. The songs are competent, if derivative, and some of the lyrical content—as on "Anal Worship of the Goatlord" is at least ridiculous in a fun way. This is not bad, but I can't help thinking that even Gerrit has better things to do with himself—I am sure Neudi does. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
