Poignard ("dagger" in French) is a band from Quebec City that I came across a few weeks ago. Creuser sa tombe (roughly "digging your own grave") is their first EP of punky heavy metal. The first band that comes to mind is Motörhead, thanks to a very old-school (think late '70s/early '80s) sound and vocals that are not without loosely reminding Lemmy, albeit a bit higher pitched, and the lyrics are in French. The French style is closer to that of France than Quebec and I couldn't help but think of some of the French heavy metal heavyweights of the '80s while listening to this. There's that catchy and addictive punk-ish rock 'n' roll vibe throughout that really sounds like the band travelled through time to find their style. I like how they mix the aforementioned Motörhead style with a more traditional heavy metal sound, basically mixing some of the best dirty heavy metal from back in the day. It's too bad that the EP is so short, and hopefully these guys are working on a full-length album in the same vein. |
