I caught these Quebec City heavy metallers when they opened for Savage Master and Nite a few weeks ago. I could swear there were more people during their set than during those of the touring bands. Meurtrier ("murderer" in French) offer some speedy heavy metal on Le visage du mal ("the face of evil"). The vocals are what stands out the most here, the vocalist delivering very high-pitched and melodic vocals in French. Standing out like this, I'd say it could be a turn-off for some, but then again, I wasn't crazy about the vocals at first, but after a couple of listens, I was hooked. The music is often in speed metal territory with some sharp, blazing guitar work and memorable riffs that call for the air guitar, but you'll also find some mellower, more melodic passages. I like the speedier, more aggressive parts better, but the melodic stuff is nothing to sneeze at. Looking forward to hearing more from Meurtrier.
