Margantha are among the ever-growing tide of black metal bands looking to the likes of Mgla and Gaerea for inspiration, and this EP definitely takes that modern approach with dense, compact arrangements and an emphasis on mood that doesn't sacrifice guitar work or aggression. I wish I had more to say, but the biggest problem with this is the same one many in this vein face, namely that it's a bit too fussy and sterile for its own good, lacking the kind of violent bite and encompassing atmosphere that made their influences stand out to begin with. The songs themselves are well done and have some nice riffs, and they only really start overstaying their welcome on the repetitive, overlong title track, but it all comes and goes without any one thing standing out, and what is here has neither the sense of build and resolution their atmospheric tendencies need nor the sheer hatred and aggression the more direct aspects demand. A perfectly acceptable debut, but if they want to stand above their ever-increasing peers, acceptable just won't cut it. |
