I remember being intrigued by Jordfäst's Av Stoft back in 2022, though it slipped out of my rotation fairly quickly. Blodsdåd och Hor follows a similar structural approach, split into two distinct parts, "En altare av skärvor" (parts I–IV) and "Dit gudarna träler är" (parts I–IV), but that's pretty much where the similarities end. This album leans further into the pagan realms of black metal, with pronounced Bathory influences and clean vocals reminiscent of Vintersorg and Månegarm. The music is very guitar-driven, full of blastbeats and tremolo riffs, offset by mid-paced, Viking-flavored sections, and with no folk instrumentation. This is especially true of "En altare av skärvor," while "Dit gudarna träler är" hews closer to Swedish second-wave fury. Much of this is pretty decent, particularly in the more melodic passages, but I struggle to stay engaged for the full duration. The straightforward black metal feels too generic and restrained, never quite breaking loose to sink its fangs in. It may be that the shift in style between the two halves disrupts the flow, but for me there's a noticeable dip in quality on the second part of the album. There's no doubt Jordfäst have the chops, but the songwriting remains too inconsistent and uneven, suggesting they haven't fully found their footing yet. |
