...of Bards and Madmen [Reimagined] is an updated version of Lothlöryen's 2005 album that is not only re-recorded but some of the lyrics have been reworked, the production values updated, etc. While I can't speak to the original, having never heard it, this new version sounds great and is full of melodic, entertaining folky heavy metal with similarities to bands such as Elvenking, Korpiklaani and Skiltron. It doesn't break any norms and features clean singing (mostly male, some female), Celtic-inspired melodies, and folky instrumentation to go along with the guitars, drums, etc. and it is all put together in a way that flows well. I didn't pick up on anything truly amazing, just a lot of well-written and performed songs, so I can't guarantee broad appeal in ...of Bards and Madmen [Reimagined] but if folk metal is your thing, you shouldn't have trouble finding things you like about it. |
