This rather mysterious band plays highly melodic Black Metal that is definitely going for that late-90s second-wave sound in the vein of the early days of Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Limbonic Art, or Dissection. Some of the riff work is good here, and the recording is probably a bit too glossy, but this album is less about music than mood, and this band does very well at evoking that feel of the underground from about 25 years ago—enough that it got me all nostalgic for that other time, when everything hadn't been done and there was a lot of room for the genre to grow. This is nothing revolutionary, but that's not the goal here. This band saw what they wanted to do, and they did it well. |
