Imperatore is an Australian band that you might not guess right away they were Oz based on the style of symphonic power metal they play on their third album, The Lionspirit. There are lots of majestic keyboards intertwining with the heavy, often down-tuned guitars and the vocals are in a range that is lower than is typical for symphonic metal but still clear and strong. There's a noticeable progressive bent to the songwriting, especially the keyboard melodies, and I am reminded of their countrymen in Voyager and even Symphony X, to a lesser degree, in the way Imperatore puts their songs together and performs them. Musically, The Lionspirit doesn't stray too far outside the lines, but the didgeridoo on "Australian" and the full-on operatic vocal performance "Il Gladiatore," end the album in rather memorable fashion. If you like symphonic metal with some prog/power in the mix, The Lionspirit is an album to check out. |
