Another album about which I've heard only praises, and it has Jensen from Witchery on it, so I definitely had to check this one out. Some people consider this to be Death Metal but I see it more as Thrash/Death (or Death/Thrash... whatever.) I hear influences from both genres on this. The vocals are way too "clean" for a Death Metal band, and the blast beats are not there (that's not a criticism.)
Musically, this is by all means a great album. A non-stop attack of drums and guitars... Metal damn it, just fucking Metal!!! It is with the vocals that I have a slight problem. The vast majority of the singing on the album is just fine. However there is some... hmmm... "cleaner" singing that is altered by some device (I don't know what it is and I don't care) that results in some really band sounding vocals, especially in the song "Hollow Ground". I mean, didn't they realize in studio that this just sounded awful? Argh. Don't do this again. The chorus on the song "Under the Surface" also has that crap on it. That shit almost ruins the album for me.
Ok, rant over. Beside that, this album is practically excellent. I'd wish it was a bit lengthier than 36 minutes, although if it saves me from more of the sucky vocal parts (which is pretty much where this album lost points in the rating), I guess 36 minutes is just fine. Witchery fans are likely to love this stuff. This is simply a very good METAL album. Go buy.
