After listening to "Serenity In Fire" (2004), I found this album to be quite similar. Actually, these guys pretty much took the same riffs from "Bound in Chains" from this album and used them on the title track of "Serenity In Fire". A little weird to say the least, because in my mind, Kataklysm definitely write some of the best metal riffs out there, and I didn't think they would need to start replicating riffs like this. Anyway…I won't hold it against them. These guys are far too cool for that. If you play music this good, you are allowed to get away with stuff like this once in a while. Anyway…

Three words will suffice for the description of this album: Fast, Brutal and catchy! Plain and simple. "Shadows And Dust" delivers the same style that Kataklysm are known for – "Northern Hyperblast" and have all round tempo changes, ranging from mid-paced to ultra fast blasts; awesome hooks and a good dose of melody crawling up hear and there. The vocals really are amazing. This guy's voice is so heavy and in your face that every song on here leaves an impression on the listener that these guys are serious and mean business! The riffs are just sick and malicious! Just the way death metal ought to be. I don't hear any weak tracks on this album. They are all good! Overall though, this is still slightly weaker and a little bit slower than the follow up and the "Hyperblasts" don't surface quite as often as on "Serenity In Fire". Recommended. You need to check out this band if you have not already done so.
