I'm not too fond of compilations, especially when I have most of the stuff on them. That said, that doesn't mean they suck. :) This one was put together by Fenriz of Darkthrone fame and focuses on old school black metal (in case you hadn't already guessed that from the album's title.) I must say I'm agreeably surprised by the song selection here, spanning several years and styles but with some lyrical common ground (duh) and all adding up to one hell of a destructive slab of Black Metal. I was surprised to see a couple of bands here, such as Destruction, Sodom and Mercyful Fate. Well, at least part of the latter two's material is often referred to as BM, but Destruction? That's a first. BUT, the song selected fits very nicely here. This reminds me I really need to complete my catalogue of Destruction albums. :) I sure won't go into a description of all the songs here. Most are classics of the genre and give a good overview of better-known old school BM. Of course, as for any compilation, some will say the track listing sucks. Opinions vary so that's a given. If you don't already have the songs (or most of them) and want to sample some of BM's history, this is worth picking up. Nice work. Note: The promo sheet mentions that the booklet contains additional by Fenriz giving an insight into each song and its relevance to him and its impact upon the scene. The promo doesn't include the booklet so I can't comment on this, but it sure sounds like an interesting added value to this compilation.
