Well this is some unholy blasting fun. Black Witchery are a long-running USBM band who have existed, under different names, for about 15 years now, but this is only their second full-length album. Very kvlt. If you are expecting old-school Venom worship or anything resembling a riff, you will be disappointed. But if you just want a blastbeat frenzy of hatred, then this is the CD for you.

If you look at the fact that there are 10 tracks on this CD and still only 25 minutes of music, you will get a rough idea of what is going on here. This is just a pure hyperspeed hammerfest of simplistic riffs and screaming. That makes it sound like it sucks, and I suppose by some standards it does suck, as this is everything people who hate Black Metal hate the most: relentless, monotonous speed, screaming about Satan, and riffs that are only riffs in the loosest sense, as they are really just two or three notes played over and over. This is as bare-bones as I think it gets, and yet it has a certain something about it that keeps you listening. Yes, almost all these songs sound pretty much alike, and they are all played at the same furious speed, but there is just something fun about it anyway. I suppose it could be partly the fact that this is music that everyone else you know will absolutely hate, and if you want all the non-Black Metal fans to leave, slap this puppy in and watch 'em run.

So, to summarize: raw, evil, primitive, hateful music with bad cover art and amateurish art design. But if you like this kind of thing, "Upheaval" is a lot of fun anyway. Crank it up and blast away, and watch the Dimmu fans and the kiddies who love Cradle Of Filth cover their ears and run screaming like the little girls they are.
