Stormwitch were one of the original bands of the German scene back in the early 80's along with other stalwarts like Running Wild and Riot, but they never really achieved that kind of popularity. This is a compilation of songs from their first three, best-regarded albums: "Walpurgis Night", "Tales Of Terror" and "Stronger Than Heaven". And as such it serves as an excellent introduction to this band for the uninitiated.

Stormwitch mixed a general Maidenish NWOBHM sound with a darker, more Mercyful Fate riff-style and a vague sort of Satanic image. The focus here is of course on riffs and choruses, and Stormwitch have those in fistfuls. The opener chosen here "Rats In The Attic" is a bit bouncy and jaunty to be a real representation of what this band was about, but when you get into darker, more arcane grooves like "Stronger Than Heaven", "Priest Of Evil", and the classic "Ravenlord" then your fist will get in the air and your air guitar hand will get a workout. And if not, then I don't want to know you, buddy. There's not a ballad or a bad track on this whole damned thing, and this is just like pure steel poured out all over the place. Like all the good classic bands, Stormwitch didn't have a gimmick, they just wrote great songs and played them like they meant it.

For a long time this was the only way you were going to get any of this stuff on CD, as when this compilation was put out, all of the Stormwitch albums were long out of print, but in the last year or so Battle Cry Records has begun re-releasing them, so once again this excellent metal is available to the masses. Still, "Priest Of Evil" will serve as a fine introduction to this band for those who have never heard them. If you aren't sure, pick this one up, and then you'll be scrambling to get the proper albums. Highly Recommended.
