Mournful Congregation's first actual full-length sets out to do one thing and one thing alone – make the listener mourn – and that it does. The sub-genre of Funeral Doom is no stranger to bands that play such emotional and sorrowful music, but this band definitely stands out. One of the qualities on display here is the fact that the band can generate such an extreme and chilly atmosphere without the assistance of any keyboards, synthesizers, orchestra, piano, violin or other such instruments that are commonly deployed in the genre. This band confines itself to the absolute basics. The acoustic guitar is used heavily, accented by the distortion of the second guitar. With that, the boys manage to literally massacre the soul and create a grim, hopeless and tortured ambiance. It is a little difficult to pen, but "The Monad of Creation" is an album that can truly make a scarring impression on you should you choose to listen to it VERY carefully and with full concentration. The combination of spoken vocals (in olden English) and death grunts is also done exceptionally well and further compliments the music and the environment it sets out to create. "The Monad of Creation" is not necessarily a ground-breaking album however and aside from the brilliant use of the acoustic guitar without the aid of keyboards, this is funeral doom that does not stray too far from the norm. Just that it stands out in terms of quality. I can babble on and on about this album, but what was said should suffice. Give these Australians a chance if you enjoy funeral doom metal. They are unlikely to disappoint, at least on this album. |
