Hmmm… Annihilator...

I'll get this out of the way early, but I've never been much of a fan to be honest. Sure, they've written an album or two of classic material in their time, but that time was 16 years ago, and they've not contributed anything to thrash metal since that time sadly.

Who knows how many different members Jeff Waters has had backing him up in the god knows how many albums since this time, and surely this has taken its toll on the band's momentum. Schizo Deluxe is a difficult listen, tired lyrics, colourless riffwork, it's just plain painful to listen to a guy hammer another nail in the bands already vacuum-sealed coffin. Repetitive, bland, it didn't move me in the slightest, despite claims that its '100% Thrash throughout' on the album sleeve (Ha ha! you nearly had me there Jeff!).

To be fair, it's slightly similar stylistically to the last Slayer album, albeit a tad thrashier. But that's as far as my plaudits go I'm afraid. I don't doubt that it'd most likely be great in a live environment, but it has transposed poorly into studio album format, especially one that clocks in at near to 50 minutes of sterile mildness. Oh, what's that you say? The limited digipak version comes with THREE bonus tracks tacked on to the already overlong 50 minutes?! JOY!!

"Don't be such an arsehole Lars" I hear you cry "Annihilator are an institution!" Yeah OK, I've maybe been a little harsh in my analysis, but think of it this way - why waste your life listening to this third-rate filth when there is so much better material out there just begging to be discovered?
