This is the debut for A Forest, who in true Black Metal fashion have released like 6 demos/splits/EPs etc. This is generally enjoyable BM in the vein of early Graveland or maybe Woodtemple, though A Forest are not Nazis that I can discern. This is not as involved as more epic stuff like Woodtemple or Iuvenes, and hangs more onto a simplistic, riffy vibe a la Vultyr or more recent Darkthrone. Vocals are the expected Dead-ish croak and the production is suitably raw. I enjoy most of this album, and the first six songs are all good, with maybe "Wolf Spirit" and "Choices" sticking out as especially good. A Forest lose me with the last track though, an interminable 17 minutes of ambient sounds and gentle acoustic melodies that does nothing but waste my time. If it had been maybe 5 minutes it would have been forgivable, but at 17 minutes it is obviously just there to pad out the running time, which would be about 25 minutes without it. So while A Forest stick to the raw stuff they sound pretty good, but with that time-waster at the end I can't rate this album all that highly.
