After a couple of years of incessant metalcore signings, it looks like Metal Blade are back on the right track. First Middian, and now German black metallers Sonic Reign. This band mixes some of the old with the new; Mix mid-90s Norwegian Black Metal with a hit of the more melodic variety that was big in the late 90s/early 2000s, and even a bit of Witchery... That's right, listening to some passages in "Fucked Up But Glorious" and "Tyrant Blessed", I couldn't help but think there was some early Witchery playing.

So there you have it: A good mixture of Norwegian BM couple with a more melodic, yet still aggressive and abrasive sound. The vocals are the expected and almost mandatory Black Metal screeches, here again occasionally reminding me of Witchery (yeah I have a fixation or something.) Crunchy, fast guitars, good drumming that makes tasteful use of blast beats (translation: not abused), melody and vocals that fit this mayhem like a glove: "Raw Dark Pure" turned out to be an agreeable surprise (especially considering that when I saw the name of the band, I thought it was some metalcore band. :)) The sound is a little bit on the clean side, but that doesn't weigh much when you take everything else into consideration. If you're not obsessed with your Black Metal being grim and minimalistic, you might just get a kick out of this album.
