Well this was a surprise for me. I've never checked out Fleshcrawl before, without any particular reason apart from the fact that I figured I'd have stumbled across them before now if they were worth a shit. Not so it seems. A German band playing classic Swedish death metal - I must repent for my sins against you Fleshcrawl! These Bavarians have obviously taken their Entombed and Dismember discographies and listened to them on such a scale that they've actually absorbed them into their collective systems. Some of their band members are even starting to look like the Swedes for fucks sake. But hell, I'm not complaining because this is actually some pretty decent shit. The guitars throb with that same enamel removing Sunlight guitar crunch, the double bass pedals flail and cripple with relentless fury, and vocally, the guy sounds so much like Gorefest's Jan-Chris De Koeijer it could actually be him. Fleshcrawl have that wonderful fascination with death that all the classic Swedes did, which makes the difference for me, and when coupled with their dynamic instrumental flair and obvious enthusiastic worship of the archetypes of the genre it makes for a killer combination. This is not merely a lesson in violence however, as there are a good amount of melodic riffs which are buried deep amongst the brawn and muscle, not to mention some excellent leads which lash your ear drums with the precise hit of a scorpion strike. A must have for any old-school Swedish death metal enthusiast; Fleshcrawl will not let you down one iota with 'Structures of Death'. |
