This is the third album AA released, right after the monstrous Once Sent From The Golden Hall, and while at first blush I didn't think it was as good as that one, over time this has become one of my favorite AA releases, and one I reach for when I am in the mood for some of that Melodic Viking Metal O' Death.

This disc is still in the vein of the band's earlier works, with the more complex, idiosyncratic arrangements and layered harmonies like the ones on their debut EP Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds. Yet this album also shows signs of the more pugilistic approach they would move into with The Avenger and thereafter. The combination makes for a nice mix, and thus some of their all-around best songs are on here, like "The Sound Of Eight Hooves" or the addictive "As Long As The Raven Flies". Broadly speaking there are no surprises on this album, as Amon Amarth hammer out the same heavy-assed, riff-oriented Death Metal as ever, but this album stands nicely between their older, more melodic work, and their punchier later stuff. I would say this is pretty much the quintessential AA album, and as such more than worthy of a spot on any metalhead's shelf. If you own only one Amon Amarth CD, it should be With Oden On Our Side, but right after that, you should have this one, no question.
