This is the third time I'm getting a chance to review Metal Message's compilation and, it's with pleasure once again that I'll give my support this great webzine promoting some of my favorite metal styles: Folk, Pagan and Viking.
On this new compilation, French artist Jean-Pascal Fournier (Immortal, Impale Nazarene) came up with a cool concept for the cover art, aptly called "Druid's summoning of Celtic god Cernunnos with the cauldron". Also worth mentioning, the work of the painter for the CD label, Kris Verwimp (Thyrfing, Enthroned, Manegarm etc...)
Thirteen compositions and more than half of the bands are strangers to my ears, sign of a healthy underground scene, thanks devil! It's with renewed pleasure that I've listened to some familiar names like: Irminsul, Folkearth (recently reviewed their great latest opus), Theudo, Slatibartfass (wish I was able to get a copy of their latest...) and that awesome folk number by Latvia's Skyforger. As for those very welcomed strangers, I was nicely surprised by quite a few such as: Tharaphita, Oakenshield and Alkonost. In the case of Oakenshield (UK), their sound is made of nice keyboards, folksy leads, great female/operatic vocals and flute. Russian brothers Alkonost also fall into that genre: superb folkloric composition with extensive use of traditional/organic instruments, creating a delightful musical moment.
Not only is the cover art is great and inviting with informative booklet and all, but this compilation gives you a good idea about the vivid Folk, Pagan and Viking scene.
