I had this album left to review but I couldn't remember the reason it was still not done. Upon listening, I remembered that it was due to its sound.
I don't mind rawness as such, being a Black Metal fan and all but, when a CD is an actual release, not a demo or live recording, I expect a more professional production. In the case of Athos, this is manifested by subdued drums, which lack punch on many occasions. Distorted arpeggios with a too high level of treble are also hard to bear and on quite a few of the fast and furious Black Metal passages, no bass is used, at least as far as I can hear. Take all these elements together and it adds up to a not so easy listening experience. "The Awakening of Athos" is a concept album based on an ancient Hellenic legend. Athos is the creation of Kerveros, who takes care of all the lyrics and music on this release. The music recorded here is either of the vicious Black Metal style or moderate which often includes clean guitar work and keyboard passages. My favorite compositions are amongst the better sounding ones with a mid pace, such as "Oneirou" and "Nykta." Also worthy of mention, a more ambient and epic keyboard-driven number opens this album quite nicely, "The Last Christian Ritual on Mount Athos."
"The Awakening of Athos" has some good moments but doesn't figure in my top releases for 2007.
