Avenger of Blood is yet another "new old school Thrash bands", and for that alone will be automatically hated by a number of people. Their loss. While some newer bands are borrowing heavily from the Bay Area Thrash sound, Avenger of Blood take most of their influences from across the Atlantic, and by that of course I mean Germany. The music is mostly a mix of mid-80s Kreator and Sodom. The vocals are Kreator-ish but borrow some of the somewhat deeper vocal style of Sodom, and that's pretty much it throughout the album - and it works. The guitar work sends you back in time to some extent, but it also shares some similarities with more recent Sodom, and even a bit of early Slayer and Metallica (very little, but a few passages immediately triggered those memories). As expected based on the aforementioned influences, the music is mid to fast-paced, with the slower moments bringing a good dose of heaviness, while the faster songs will send you in an air guitaring, headbanging frenzy. And of course, what's the classic Thrash sound without a few strategically placed solos to bring some order to this chaotic onslaught - those are served here as well, with just the correct dosage.
Avenger of Blood won't win any awards for originality, but they deliver the goods pretty well, and after listening to this daily for over two weeks, it's still with reluctance that I hit the pause button when I get interrupted at the office ("you interrupted a good song for THIS!?") Death Brigade is a good slab of old school abrasive, razor-sharp vocals with venomous vocals. Recommended if you're not one of those whiny bitches I mentioned at the beginning of this review.
