Gylfaginning is the other promo that was included in the package I got from Einheit Produktionen, for my hearing pleasure. Once again, a great cover art inviting the listener to an epic journey.
Right from the first song, I felt familiar with Oakenshield's music. The reason for this is not only the musical direction, but the fact that opening track, "Ginnungagap", was also on Metal Message Vol IV, and I instantly recognized that melody played on a flute. This project is a solo realization from an English artist by the name of Ben Corkhill, who also recorded, produced and mixed this work. Not bad at all for a debut album! Much respect shall be given to this pagan soul, because he is entering the scene with a very solid release. Another session musician was invited to play the violin, namely Gareth Evans. Ben handles guitars, flute, bass, voices, keyboards and drum machines. This last item is the only weakness here, since I believe that a real drum would have definitely added a more organic sound to the music. Nonetheless, Gylfaginning is a very melodic and pleasant opus of epic Folk /Viking metal from the first song to the closing track. Many of the composition could be mentioned here, such as "Ginnungagap", "Idavoll" "Yggdrasil", "Valhalla", The Death of Baldr" and "Vigrid". Those either include acoustic guitars, atmospheric keyboards, epic choirs, rasps, violin, varied tempos, or a combination of these elements.
Multi instrumentalists are often found in Black metal and Folk /Viking metal, so as far as I'm concerned, this proves more than anything else where talent resides. Oakenshield is definitely a band to look for now and in the future for great Folk / Viking moments.
