I went to the first night of this year's Montreal Metalfest on July 27. Six bands: Aphasia, Darkest Hour, Dying Fetus, Kataklysm, Children Of Bodom and Destruction.

"Doors open at 5pm" means "6pm". I didn't know there was a time difference between Ottawa and Montreal.... anyways...  How to piss people off, in one easy lesson.

Aphasia went first, I didn't see much of it since there was a stand selling tons of CDs for pretty good prices. Darkest Hour was... ok, nothing impressive, really. When talking, the front man was back to the crowd, which felt a little weird.  The drummer is the one who made the crowd react a little bit, especially when he stood up with a camera to take a picture.

Dying Fetus was 3rd, now a lot of people were familiar with the band so there was a little more excitement. Very good performance.  For me this is really when the show started, as Dying Fetus has much more stage experience than the first two bands, and they have some pretty good material - I only knew the band by name.   Kataklysm was next, I'm not much into their stuff and I was getting some fresh air outside (it was hot as hell in there).  I did catch the last three or four songs, and actually only one of them was worth being there for.  To Kataklysm's credit, they put on a great live show.

It was obvious that most people were there to see Children Of Bodom. The place was PACKED when they came on stage, and everyone went crazy. The sound sucked for the first two songs, but everything was readjusted during the third song. It was great to finally see them live.  The band was obviously very pleased with the crowd's enthusiasm, the front man yelling "you guys fuckin' rule!" at multiple occasions.  I would have wished for a longer set, but with four bands playing before them and the headliner coming up next, time was limited.  They were the only opening act who did an encore.

Last but not least, the headlines: DESTRUCTION!!!!!!!!!!  Fuck, now THAT TOTALLY RULED! As much as I like Children Of Bodom, Destruction just kicks ass on stage, this was one of the best live performance I've seen. Awesome. A lot of people left after Children Of Bodom... well, it's their loss, because they missed one hell of a show. Destruction's front man has quite a stage presence as well. They had some microphone problems and he seem to be getting pissed at the tech guy at some point.  He used three microphones (left, center and right of the stage) so he could sing no matter where he was.  Trash metal at its best, Destruction's performance exceeded all my expectations.  If you have a chance to see them live, don't miss on the opportunity!

Anyways... Six bands is a bit too much. Almost seven hours in a venue where it was hot as hell - good thing we were allowed out and back in, otherwise I think I would have died in there. The show would have been better with only Dying Fetus, Children Of Bodom and Destruction all playing longer sets.

One hell of a show...
