Insidious Poisoning sure know how to pick their Black Metal raw and savage. As the name implies, Maleficum Orgia is a satanic fest with sexual overtones - be it the lyrics or the occasional woman moaning. Not too surprisingly, there are a few hints of Carpathian Forest popping up here and there, although I'd say Maleficum Orgia is a little less "polished" (not that I would call C.F. polished), somewhat more chaotic at times and the vocals often borrow more from Death Metal-style growls than the vocal style one would usually expect from Black Metal, be it rasps or screeches (there is some of that.) Some sound effects are used here and there to convey a more demoniac and "terrifying" atmosphere, such as a beast growling and some unidentifiable screechy, grinding sounds for instance - simple but effective. The style of BM at play here is pretty much rooted into the early/mid-90s Scandinavian style, a good mix of mid-paced, heavy and atmospheric parts and fast-paced take-no-prisoner parts that'll make those speakers move around the room. There are some more "mellow" and catchy parts - guitar work mostly (such as on "Black Hate") that sound much more disciplined but still pretty damn raw, but overall this album conveys an evil era that's bound to freak out the uninitiated.
Not much to complain about here, save for the string of 16-second fillers that precede the last three, untitled tracks. That's a fucking annoyance alright, and something I'll just never "get" (assuming there's something there to get in the first place.) Of course it's easy to just rip the album and burn yourself a copy without that stuff, but we shouldn't have to. Anyway, this is minor in what is otherwise a solid slab of raw, chaotic and satanic Black Metal.
