When I think of metal bands from France, I usually think of Black Metal as that country has a very rich BM scene. It was quite a surprise to see this CD come in the mail and see that there are Death Metal bands there too - and - at least in this particular case - very good too. Gurkkhas play a brand of Death Metal that is heavily influenced by American Death Metal. The slower parts remind me a bit of Immolation (although the bass is more discreet in Gurkkhas' case) while some of the faster moments seem to borrow a little bit from The Chasm. The vocals are of the guttural type but not overdone (i.e. you don't sense the vocalist's lunch coming back up), here again I'm reminded a bit of The Chasm. The guitars are what a like to call "razor sharp", with well-defined sharp riffs and an overall raw sound. The production is good for the genre and the music comes out strong and everything sounds pretty much into place, which for me is a requirement to really enjoy this genre of music. This is overall a very fast-paced album, with the occasional slowdowns that are pretty much the norm in that brand of Death Metal.

Reading a short interview with the band in the French magazine "Metallian", I learned that the Gurkkhas are some type of soldiers and the band's albums revolve around that, so we have a sort of concept going on here. Since there were no lyrics with the promo, I can't comment on this, but that's something to check out for those who'll get the booklet. Bottom line, if you like the American Death Metal sound, this is some very well-played stuff definitely worth checking out, even though it lacks a little in the originality department (but that little detail didn't prevent me from giving this album a good number of spins. ;)) Good stuff.
