I know I already have a review for this album up on the Metal-Archives from way back when, but I'll have you know that it is quite outdated, as I have decided that this album deserves naught but the utmost praise. Skeletenwitch play essentially straight up Thrash Metal with some tinges of Melodic Death Metal accompanied by Black Metal vocals, and I must say that it is a fantastic mixture. Once upon a time, I complained about the songs running together due to a lack of variety, and the album suffers as a whole because of it. I have since gouged out my left eyeball with a rusty salad fork. While every song may superficially seem like nothing more than fast-paced Thrash/Black metal hybrid, further inspection shows far more variety within the album. How can one say that the highly melodic "Within My Blood" sounds exactly like the almost Black Metal-esque "Remains of the Defeated"? Or that the almost neo-classicism of "Soul Thrashing Black Sorcery" is identical to the minimalist Thrash extravaganza of "Vengeance Will Be Mine"? It may take some time to sink in, but every song contains some special riff, melody, or lead that will make it stand out. And that is where Skeletonwitch's strength lies... in their ability to write fantastic, lasting, memorable, and enjoyable songs. Frankly, the tiniest of weak spots here do little to detract from the overall quality of Beyond the Permafrost. I'm keeping this review short because I can't stretch my fanboy dribbling across multiple paragraphs and keep it coherent. Just know that Beyond the Permafrost is one of the best records of its kind, and that it may well be my posthumous "Best of 2007" winner, ousting the mighty Symphony X. Fans of Thrash, Black, and Death metal owe themselves a listen.
