This is not too bad, but is nothing you have not already heard. Arise are a Swedish band listed as "Death/Thrash", but who really have more to do with Gothenburg than anything else. This is their fourth album, and I guess if they were going to produce a classic they already would have done it. There's nothing wrong with the music here, as it is fairly kinetic and heavy with definite similarities to Dew Scented or Whoracle-period In Flames. The first half of this disc is generally better, as the band seems to run out of ideas around track 5 and just starts recycling them. There is some solid riffing on this album, the vocals are a nicely urgent bellow and some of the lead work is really excellent, but there is nothing that pulls you in and makes you want to listen to it more than a few times. On first spin I thought this was really good, but it paled after repeated spins. The Reckoning is a decent disc of derivative Swedish metal, but it's not going to really kick your ass. |
