This had to be one of the supremely anticipated releases of the year. The task of having to follow-up last year's high quality release Andromeda Unchained would prove to be a daunting one indeed, however, not only did the Danes hold serve, but with The Detached they raised things to a whole new level. The Detached is a concept album whose story is based on humans who are immortal and possess the innate ability to defy time and space. But the real star of the show of course is not the storyline; the music is in the simplest, most candid form brilliant! One advantage that Anubis Gate enjoy, not only on this album, but the previous as well is the production experience that vocalist Jacob Hansen brings to the table, because in the engineering department Anubis Gate sound larger than life, out-flanking practically all the opposition in the Progressive Metal arena. However, I don't want to discredit this release by limiting it to one specific category of music, for spread throughout you hear both Power Metal as well as Symphonic Metal influences.

One of the main problems I have with prog is the lack of accessibility within the arrangements. That is not a problem here; the songs, while for the most part being heavy contain a variety of tempo shifts and movements all of which are neatly folded into a creative and intense brand of catchy melodic Progressive Power Metal. Look for The Detached to show up as a regular on many a best of 2009 list. I could sing praises toward this gem all day, but all that would serve to do is delay you from purchasing this album sooner. Go Buy!
