I enjoyed this band's 2007 EP Unholy enough to go back and check out their debut album Unleash, which was decent, if not great. This is their second full-length work, and it is way better than decent. In fact it's pretty fucking great. A Swedish band playing Swedish Death metal may not be original – in fact there is nothing original about My Own Grave at all – but again a band proves that if you do it right, then it is still worth doing, no matter how many times it has been done before. Necrology is just a vicious, heavy, riffy slab of Death Metal. Whatever gimmicks you are thinking of that have become endemic in Death Metal these days (clean vocals, keyboards, metalcore vocals) you can just fucking forget about hearing any of it here. My Own Grave play surprisingly catchy and tight Death Metal without trying to be overly technical. They obviously have chops, and there is a dimension of musicality here that ‘core bands will never imagine, but My Own Grave are not about showing off or wanking, they are just about kicking you in the face with pure Death Metal. You can say they are derivative, and they are, you could name a dozen bands that they have drawn their sound from (Dismember, Entombed, Unleashed, etc.), but that won't save you from having your ass stomped flat by killers like "Disciples of War" or "Age of Torment". Not a Death Metal album to miss. |
