This is an interesting demo from Metherra, a Norwegian band who mix up some different Death Metal elements to create a sound that is at least interesting, if not earth-shaking. What this band has done is to take very competent Morbid Angel-styled speedy DM and throw in a large dash of Gothenburg Melodeath guitar styling. So you get quite a bit of hyperspeed blasting with solid riffs and a lot of visceral punch, and then they break it up with long passages of melodic guitar rwork and even some clean vocals. I have to say the playing is impressive, and I like the melodic interludes, but the clean vocals have to go, as they make the whole thing sound far too trendy. But I have to say this band has chops, and when they are just ripping into it they sound pretty damned good. A band worth watching. |
