For my first encounter with this Swedish act simply called Svart, I had the chance to listen to two new releases. Varan Tid Arförbi is, believe it or not, a 76 minutes EP. That's right folks, this is not a typo! In reality, there are three songs on this EP plus some bonus tracks. Mind you, the three actual compositions last over 53 minutes. Song # 2, "Mot Dödens Slätter" lasts nearly 26 minutes and I believe that's the longest black metal song I have ever heard.

From the first spin, I found Svart interesting and with careful listening, I came to wonder why a bit. No, this is not really a criticism, but something to ponder. True, this is good Scandinavian-style black metal with cold guitar work, fast paces, sick vocals and so on, but how could something repetitive keep from being boring or redundant. It might be because the melancholy that main man Draug (all instruments but drums, besides having recorded, mixed and mastered this album) has injected in his cold dark song structures, this melancholic work being the result of delicate leads and arpeggios. Of course, you'll have breaks from the fast times, and some calmer passages come in handy while increasing the melodious aspect of this art. As for the bonus tracks, I would presume they are demos since the production is rawer, although very acceptable as such. In those, you can hear a bit more variation. "Angest" is an ambient keyboard instrumental. "Da Allt Upphör" is introduced by a classical guitar, followed then by black metal with varied tempos, besides being one of the best tracks. You also find variety on the last two songs, a bit of psychedelics and a touch of electronics.

In the end, we have a pretty pleasant long EP. Perhaps some compositions are too long; still they convey the right spirit.
